A small bar, timeline or table is often faster and clearer than a page of calculations. **1** ### Read Underline the amount or quantity you must find. **2** ### Model Show the whole and its parts before calculating. **3** ### Solve Do one operation, then use that result in the next. **4** ### Check Add the units and make a rough estimate. ### Worked example: badges at the club The club starts with 36 badges and gives one third away, then 8 more. How many badges are left? 1. One third of 36 is 12. 2. After the first gift, 36 - 12 = 24. 3. After 8 more, 24 - 8 = 16. **Check:** 12 + 8 + 16 = 36. The pieces make the original whole. DRAW THE WHOLE FIRST 12 12 12 TAKE AWAY 12, THEN 8 16 badges remain ### The trap to watch for: "of the remaining" If a question says one third of what remains, do not take that third from the starting number.
