Why this sheet exists

## What is in the free 11+ vocabulary list with meanings?

**Quick answer:** 48 curated words across three stages, each with a child-friendly meaning and an example sentence. The PDF ends with a meaning check and answers.

It is a cross-year starting route, not an official list of words guaranteed to appear in an exam.

Some children need to build the language of a passage before they can tackle harder [11+ English comprehension papers](https://pip11plus.com/11-plus-english-papers). Others know the definition but have not yet learnt which word fits a sentence.

This resource moves through both, then gives space to check understanding.

01 · Start here

### Find the meaning

Build a confident base for understanding passages and instructions.

peculiar strange or unusual.

02 · Build confidence

### Choose precisely

Move from knowing a word to choosing the right one for a sentence. Our [homophones list](https://pip11plus.com/homophones) helps with the pairs that sound the same but are spelt differently.

persuade to make someone agree by giving good reasons.

03 · Stretch

### Read between the lines

Practise the richer words that change how a passage feels.

meticulous very careful and exact about small details.

### Keep the whole path together.

The printable includes all 48 definitions, examples, the meaning check and answers.

## Can your child work out the meaning from context?

Tap each word to reveal its meaning. In the PDF, they can go further by writing a new sentence, then check eight clues at the back.

### Read it. Think it. Reveal it.

These examples come from the curated word list.

**reluctant · “She was reluctant to leave her warm bed.”**

Unwilling; not wanting to do something. The sentence hints that leaving the bed was hard to choose.

**conspicuous · “Her bright red coat made her conspicuous in the crowd.”**

Very easy to notice; standing out. The red coat gives you a clue.

**peculiar · “The milk had a peculiar smell.”**

Strange or unusual. The smell was not what the person expected.

## When should we use the year-specific vocabulary lists?

The Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 pages are fuller references. They include more words, meanings and example sentences, plus free flashcards and spelling games.

Year 6 also distinguishes extra stretch words from its statutory-word section. Use those pages if your child wants more at a familiar level, and use this PDF when you want a short route across levels.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is there an official 11+ vocabulary list?**

No. The 11+ does not have one universal vocabulary list, and local tests differ.

This resource is a curated starting path drawn from Pip’s Year 4, 5 and 6 word collections, not a prediction of exam words.

**What is included in the free 11+ vocabulary list with meanings PDF?**

It contains 48 words with child-friendly meanings and example sentences, arranged in three stages, plus an eight-question meaning check and answers.

**Is this the same as the Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 lists?**

No. This PDF selects a smaller cross-year route so a child can start and progress.

The fuller year-specific word lists and interactive tools remain available separately.

**How should my child use a vocabulary list for 11+ preparation?**

Read a short group of words, explain each one in their own words, and write or say a new sentence. Revisit words they miss and practise English questions in Pip for context.

**Do I need to give an email address to download the vocabulary PDF?**

Yes. Enter your email and the download starts at once.
