Inside Pip’s learning system

# Adaptive learning that notices _what comes next._

A child can be confident in one skill, stuck on another and new to a third. Pip adjusts after every answer, chooses what to practise next, and brings skills back before they fade, for 11+ and KS2 SATs.

The idea, made concrete

## What is adaptive learning? A different next step for a different need.

Adaptive learning uses a learner’s responses and progress evidence to change the practice they receive. In Pip, that begins with a separate [Pip Score](https://pip11plus.com/pip-score) for each skill, not one label for the whole child.

One skill, one learning loop

### Each answer changes the picture.

A starting level comes from setup and, when taken, a short placement activity. After every practice answer, that skill’s Pip Score updates.

Pip uses the updated score to set the level and shape of the next question in that skill. Progress in hidden words does not automatically push fractions ahead.

A child can stretch in one place and rebuild confidence in another.

01 **They answer** A real question in one skill

02 **Pip Score moves** Evidence changes for that skill

03 **Next challenge** Level can rise or ease back

04 **Pip remembers** Each skill gets a check-back time. Strong skills return less often; shaky ones sooner.

When practice gets tricky

### Stuck? Pip steps back.

When a child misses several in a row, Pip does not just repeat the same thing. It eases the level or steps back to the building block underneath, then returns to the original skill.

With Pip Pro, it can also offer a short Pip Teaches lesson.

Question quality

### How does Pip know how hard a question is?

Every question type has a difficulty, checked before it reaches your child. Pip aims for the sweet spot: hard enough to stretch, easy enough to keep going.

Too easy The stretch zone Too hard

Beyond difficulty

## The next question matters. _So does the next skill._

Pip looks across what a child has tried, where they are stuck and what needs revisiting. The Pip Pro plan adds the exam date, whether they are preparing for 11+ or KS2 SATs.

A real moment from Pip

## Room to grow, even after _Hard._

Adaptive does not mean every child is held in the middle. A child who has mastered a skill at Hard can be offered an optional Extreme challenge, with a clear choice to stay on Hard.

The screenshot shows Hidden Words as one example. This stretch moment is not a replacement for the broader plan that decides what to practise.

**The choice stays with the child.** The app offers “Bring it on” or “Stay on Hard for now.” Extreme is a Pip Pro challenge.

Clear paths, shared adaptation

## One Pip. Different ways to prepare.

Every child gets an adaptive next question, building-block help and skills brought back for review. Pip Pro adds a full plan towards exam day for both 11+ and KS2 SATs.

The tracks stay separate, so SATs-only children do not see 11+ reasoning.

01 / EVERY CHILD · ADAPTIVE FROM THE FIRST ANSWER

### Start and practise

Year, goal and optional placement set the starting point. After every answer, Pip adjusts the next question's level.

If your child gets stuck, it eases off or steps back to the building block underneath. Skills come back for review before they fade.

It works for 11+ and KS2 SATs.

[See Pip’s practice subjects](https://pip11plus.com/#subjects)

02 / PIP PRO · PLAN TOWARDS EXAM DAY

### Make a plan from the evidence

An eight-week plan works back from your child's exam date: 11+ in September, SATs in May. It weighs gaps, evidence, time since practice and your family's focus, then shifts to mixed exam-style review as the day gets closer.

Pro also unlocks Extreme challenges.

03 / KS2 SATS · ADAPTED AND KEPT SEPARATE

### Follow the SATs route, adapted

SATs maths and English adapt objective by objective, with the same step-back and review. A SATs-only child only sees SATs content, never 11+ reasoning.

Pip Pro can also plan backwards from SATs week in May.

Week by week

## A plan that rebuilds itself, and rewards that have to be earned.

Real weeks do not run on a clean calendar. Pip is built so the plan and the rewards both follow what your child actually did.

PIP PRO · THE EIGHT-WEEK PLAN

### Every week has a checkable goal

Each week names which skills it is lifting. The weeks ahead are rebuilt from what really happened: a skill that clicked moves to light review, and one that was not touched moves back up the list.

If a busy week slows things down, or your child races ahead, the plan can re-anchor to where they really are. You are always asked first. A halfway check and a final mock show the progress rather than assume it.

EVERY CHILD · PIP PAL

### Rewards only come from real practice

Pip Pal, the companion inside the app, grows through its Brain meter. That meter only fills from questions genuinely answered, never from the arcade mini-games.

The mini-games run on a separate coin economy, so they can keep a child coming back without ever standing in for the practice itself.

EVERY CHILD · HONEST NUMBERS

### Nothing claims progress it has not earned

A skill is only shown as mastered once its Pip Score has been earned through a run of right answers. One lucky answer proves nothing on its own.

A skill is never marked mastered just because a session ended, and the Pro plan is never shown as on track just because a week passed on the calendar.

Private by design

## Their learning picture belongs to your family.

Pip's adaptive engine runs on your child's device. There is no AI chatbot deciding what they should learn, and we do not sell their learning data.

Answers are not sent to an AI service to be analysed for the next question.

If you choose to link a learner to a Pro parent account, practice can be securely synced to that account. This optional backup is separate from on-device adaptive decisions; [read how Pip handles data](https://pip11plus.com/privacy).

Questions parents ask

## The useful answers, without the buzzwords.

Adaptive learning is easiest to judge by the decisions a product makes. Here is how Pip changes the question, chooses the skill and times the return to it.

**What is adaptive learning?**

Adaptive learning is practice that changes in response to a learner’s evidence. Pip uses three layers: the right question for each skill, the right skill to practise next and the right time to bring it back for review.

Pip Pro adds a fuller plan towards 11+ or SATs exam day.

**How does adaptive learning work?**

There is a starting point, then a loop: answer a question, update that skill’s Pip Score and choose the next challenge. Pip can step back to a building block when a child gets stuck and set a check-back time for each skill.

The Pro plan also weighs gaps, evidence, recency and the exam date.

**What are the benefits of adaptive learning?**

It can make practice more relevant: a child can move ahead in a strong skill without being pushed ahead in every subject, while weaker or less-explored areas remain visible. Pip gives answer feedback and a clearer view of progress; no app can guarantee an exam result.

**What is the difference between adaptive learning and personalised learning?**

“Personalised” can mean a family has chosen a goal or path. “Adaptive” means the challenge and practice route respond to evidence.

Pip uses both: the family selects 11+, SATs or both, while answers and practice history help shape the next step and when to revisit it.

**Can adaptive learning help with 11+ maths and reasoning?**

Pip tracks progress skill by skill across 11+ maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. A child can receive a different level of challenge in each skill, step back to a building block when stuck and return for review.

Pro adds the plan towards exam day.

**How does Pip choose what my child should practise next?**

Pip uses the updated Pip Score to set the next question's level, then considers gaps, low evidence and when a skill needs review. If the child is stuck, it steps back to a building block.

Pip Pro adds a short lesson and a full study plan towards the child's 11+ or SATs exam date.

**Does the same adaptive plan apply to KS2 SATs?**

Yes. SATs practice adapts objective by objective, brings topics back for review and, with Pip Pro, plans towards SATs week.

The 11+ and SATs tracks stay separate, so a SATs-only child only sees SATs content.

**What happens when my child gets stuck?**

Pip eases the question level or steps back to the building-block skill underneath. Once the child is ready, it returns to the original skill rather than repeating the same question at them.

With Pip Pro, Pip can also offer a short Pip Teaches lesson.

**Does Pip help my child remember, not just learn?**

Yes. Each skill gets a check-back time.

Strong skills return less often and shaky ones sooner, so practice includes review before learning fades.

**Does Pip use AI or collect my child's data?**

Pip’s adaptive decisions run on your child’s device, without an AI chatbot analysing their answers. We do not sell their learning data.

Linking a learner to a Pro parent account can sync practice to that account, but that is separate from how Pip chooses the next question. [Read the privacy policy](https://pip11plus.com/privacy).

**How does Pip know how hard a question is?**

Every question type has a difficulty that is checked before it reaches your child. Pip uses that difficulty with the child’s skill progress to aim for a challenge that stretches them without making practice feel impossible.

**Does my child have to subscribe to try Pip?**

No. Pip is free to download, and every child gets adaptive practice, step-back help and review reminders.

Pip Pro adds the exam-date study plan and Extreme challenges. Parent accounts are optional.
