# FSCE Creativity Paper

![Pip](https://pip11plus.com/media/pip-mark.png)

**By the Pip team** Updated October 2026

The FSCE creativity paper is the Discovery paper in the Reading School and Chelmsford County High School (CCHS) tests. Children plan on the question booklet, then write a handwritten answer to a creative task on a special answer sheet. It is only judged if the child reaches the qualifying standard on the computer-marked papers. Looking for practice material? See [FSCE past papers and free alternatives](https://pip11plus.com/fsce-11-plus-past-papers).

This guide uses the schools' own papers and policies, not tutor guesses. Where the schools haven't said something, such as the exact writing time, we say so.

If your child is in Year 5 now and aiming for Reading or CCHS, they sit in 2027 for September 2028 entry. That leaves time to practise every kind of task below, and Year 4 children (sitting in 2028) can start with short, fun prompts.

**TL;DR**

- The paper is called **Discovery**. The task is called **Creativity**.
- The **latest official guide** (2026) shows **five sample tasks**: a poem, a persuasive answer, a problem and solution, written instructions and a "what would you do" choice.
- Planning is on the booklet and is **not marked**. Children **cannot start writing** on the answer sheet until they are told.
- It is **judged by trained school staff**, and only for children who reach the **qualifying standard** on the computer-marked papers.
- The official guide gives **no writing time**. The only published timing is **5 minutes planning and 15 writing**, from an older 2021 guide.

## What is the FSCE creativity paper?

It is a written task that asks children to have an original idea or solve a problem in an imaginative way, then explain it clearly on paper. FSCE and the schools define creativity as thinking of new and imaginative ideas, or solving problems in original ways.

Reading School and CCHS both set four papers that can be sat in any order: Adventure (multiple choice), Beacon (short written answers), Compass (multiple choice) and Discovery (a creative response). Our [FSCE 11+ explained](https://pip11plus.com/fsce-11-plus-explained) guide covers all four, and the [paper-by-paper guide](https://pip11plus.com/fsce-adventure-beacon-compass-discovery-papers) goes deeper on each one.

Read the name carefully. "Discovery" is the paper. "Creativity" is what it tests. Some tutor sites call it "creative writing", but the latest official samples show it is wider than stories.

## Which schools set the creativity paper?

In the latest official papers (2027 entry), Reading School and Chelmsford County High School for Girls set a creativity task. The Lancaster, Skipton, Clitheroe and Ermysted's guide lists only two English and maths papers, with no creativity paper.

The Gloucestershire grammars, which join FSCE for 2028 entry, list three papers for their 3 July 2027 test and no Discovery paper ([The Crypt School](https://cryptschool.org/2028-entry-information-year-5-september-2026/)). Check your own school's page for the year your child sits.

| School or group | Creativity paper in the official material? | Where we checked |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Reading School | Yes. Discovery paper, "a Creative Response" | Reading's 2026 familiarisation guides for children and parents |
| Chelmsford County High School for Girls | Yes. "Creativity" is part of the Entrance Test | CCHS admissions policy for 2027 and its results FAQ |
| Lancaster Girls', Skipton Girls', Clitheroe Royal, Ermysted's | No creativity paper in the paper list. Two papers, English and maths | The consortium familiarisation guide and FAQs |
| Heckmondwike Grammar | Its 2021 guide had a creative writing Paper 3. Check its current guide | Heckmondwike's 2021 FSCE guide |

The wider list of FSCE schools is in [which schools use the FSCE 11+](https://pip11plus.com/which-schools-use-fsce-11-plus). If your school is not Reading or CCHS, open its own familiarisation paper first. Schools choose their own papers.

## How is the creativity paper set?

The latest familiarisation guide (2026) says children get a question booklet with instructions, space for rough notes, then a special answer sheet. The question can be one task or a few linked ones.

- There is a short planning time. Children can write notes, make a plan or draw a spider diagram in the booklet.
- The plan is **not marked**. Only the answer sheet is.
- Children **cannot start on the answer sheet** during planning. They are told when planning ends.
- The answer is written **by hand**. The guide says to use a black biro or ballpoint pen, and pencils are not allowed.
- Instructions come by pre-recorded audio, as in the other papers.

### What do the official sample tasks look like?

The latest guide for children (2026) gives five sample creativity questions. They aren't stories with bullet points. Each one asks for a different kind of thinking.

| Sample | What the child is asked to do | Skill underneath |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Write a poem about the pen they are holding, using all five senses | Close description |
| 2 | Find two very different new uses for their chair, then persuade the reader which is best | Ideas plus argument |
| 3 | The world is silent. Describe one problem this causes and suggest a solution | Problem solving |
| 4 | Look at a picture of a shape, imagine it as a metal object and write buyer instructions | Inventing and explaining |
| 5 | A dragon lands on the school roof. Hide, talk to it or ride it? There is no right answer | Choice and imagination |

The guide also warns that test content changes every year, so these samples show the style, not what will appear.

### Is there an older "title and bullets" style?

Yes. Heckmondwike Grammar's 2021 FSCE guide had a creative writing Paper 3 with a title, "Into the Forest", and three bullets: think of an interesting storyline, describe the setting and use varied vocabulary and sentence structures. It suggested **5 minutes planning and 15 minutes writing**, and said real timings might differ.

That is the only timing FSCE has published for a creative task, and it is from an old format. Treat it as a floor for practice, not as the rule for Reading or CCHS.

_Creativity is judged after the computer-marked papers, and only for children who reach the qualifying standard._

## Is the creativity paper marked for every child?

No. Reading School and CCHS both say all papers except Creativity are computer marked and age-standardised first. Only children who meet the qualifying standard on those papers have their Creativity answer judged.

CCHS also says the qualifying score for marking Creativity is internal and is not released. In the latest published year (2027 entry), **1,119** children sat its test and **476** reached the eligible score, which was **92 or above** plus being "of the standard" in Creativity.

This changes how you think about practice. The reality is that a strong creative answer cannot rescue weak English and maths scores, because it may never be read. Keep the computer-marked papers strong too. See [FSCE pass marks and scores](https://pip11plus.com/fsce-11-plus-pass-mark-and-scores) for how the scoring works.

## How is the creativity paper marked?

By comparative judgement. Trained school staff are shown two answers and decide which one better answers the question. They judge the overall quality of the writing, not a tick-box score.

Once enough staff have judged enough pairs, the school can see where each child's answer sits among all the others. CCHS says each paper is judged many times by different staff who know the standard needed for entry. Because of that, **the Creativity paper cannot be re-marked**.

The schools have not published a mark scheme or word count, so nobody outside can say exactly what the judges tick. What we can say from how comparative judgement works is below. It is our reading, not an official list.

### What does comparative judgement reward?

- **Answering the actual question.** The judges choose which answer "best addresses the question". If the task says persuade, a pretty description is not enough.
- **One clear idea, followed through.** A judge reads quickly. A single fresh idea with a clear start and finish stands out more than five half ideas.
- **Clear, controlled writing.** The guide asks for writing that is clear, accurate and coherent, with language suited to the purpose and reader.
- **Detail that shows thinking.** One odd, true detail beats a general one. "The pen smells of old cupboards" beats "the pen is nice".
- **Finishing.** An answer that stops halfway loses the pair, whatever the first lines were like.

## How should my child practise?

Practise short, varied tasks with a plan first, then a timed write, one a week. There are no official past papers and no authorised practice papers, and the guide says the content changes every year, so the skill matters more than any one task type.

### A weekly routine that fits the paper

This is our practice routine. The official guide gives no writing time, so we used the old 5 plus 15 as the minimum and added a little room.

| Step | Time | What your child does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Read the task twice | 1 minute | Underline the doing words, such as describe, persuade, suggest or explain |
| Plan on a separate sheet | 5 minutes | Use the template below. No sentences yet |
| Write on one clean sheet | 15 to 20 minutes | Black pen. Start only after the plan time ends |
| Read back | 2 minutes | Check it answers the task. Fix words, not the whole idea |

_A planning template to copy onto scrap paper. Plan on a separate sheet, as the real plan is not marked._

**Pro tip: plan the ending first.**

Frankly, most weak answers run out of time before they end. Ask your child to write the last line in the plan box, then write towards it. A finished answer with a clear ending beats a longer one that stops mid-thought.

### Original practice prompts in the FSCE style

These are written by us. They copy the style of the official samples, not their wording, and none is a real FSCE question. Use one at a time.

| Prompt | Type | What a strong answer does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **1.** Write a poem about the oldest tree on your street. Make us feel we are touching it, hearing it and smelling it. | Senses poem | Uses three senses with exact detail, not "big and brown" |
| **2.** What else could a school bag be used for? Give two very different ideas, then persuade us which is better. | Ideas and persuasion | Picks one idea and gives two reasons, not a list |
| **3.** Overnight, every clock in the world stops. Describe one problem this causes and suggest a clever fix. | Problem and solution | Names one real problem and a fix that fits it |
| **4.** You find a small key that opens nothing yet. Write the instructions for its next owner. | Instructions | Gives clear steps in order, with one surprising rule |
| **5.** A talking fox offers to swap places with you for one day. Would you say yes? Explain what you would do and why. | Choice and imagination | Makes a decision and keeps to it |
| **6.** Invent a gadget that makes Monday mornings better. Write the text for the back of its box. | Invention and explaining | Explains what it does and why anyone needs it |
| **7.** A robot and a seagull argue over one chip. Write what they say to each other. | Dialogue | Gives each speaker a different voice and a reason |
| **8.** Use "The Last Lighthouse" as the title for a story. Think of an interesting storyline, describe the setting and use varied vocabulary and sentence structures. | Title and bullets (2021 style) | One clear problem, one setting, an ending that lands |

More prompts, with space to write, are in our [FSCE writing prompts and practice questions](https://pip11plus.com/fsce-practice-questions-and-writing-prompts). For longer story and description tasks, use the free [11+ creative writing worksheets](https://pip11plus.com/11-plus-creative-writing-worksheets).

**Pro tip: mix the task types.**

If your child only writes stories, a poem or a set of instructions will feel strange on the day. Rotate through the table above. Ask after each one, "What did the task ask you to do?" Then check the answer did that.

### Everyday ways to build the skill

The parent guide suggests simple talk-based habits. They work because children must think clearly before they write.

- **Three vivid words.** Point at something and ask for three words for how it looks, sounds or feels.
- **Past, present, future.** Ask for one sentence each: "I discovered", "I notice" and "I wonder".
- **Two solutions.** Give a small problem, such as a cat stuck in a tree. Ask for two ideas, then write the best as "I would... because...".
- **Explain it to a friend.** After a book or a clip, your child teaches you the main idea using first, then, finally.
- **Mind-map first.** Draw a circle and branch out words or sketches. Talk through the map before writing.

**Building the words behind the writing?** Pip is free English and maths practice that builds vocabulary, grammar and reading, for as long as your child likes.

### A workbook for the writing itself

If your child wants guided practice, [11 Plus Creative Writing: The Writing Studio](https://pip11plus.com/books/11-plus-creative-writing) is our write-in workbook. It teaches story and descriptive writing one skill at a time. A second book, , adds more practice and worked examples. Both are general 11+ writing books, not FSCE papers.

To check a piece at home, our guide to [marking 11+ creative writing](https://pip11plus.com/how-to-mark-11-plus-creative-writing) gives a simple scorecard. It is a home tool, not the schools' method.

## What happens on the day?

Children get a question booklet and a separate answer sheet for each paper, and hear the instructions by audio. They hear when planning starts and ends. Bring two black pens, and no pencils. Our [FSCE test day guide](https://pip11plus.com/fsce-11-plus-test-day) and [answer sheet guide](https://pip11plus.com/fsce-answer-sheet-guide) cover the rest. For the schools' own wording, read the [Reading School 11+ guide](https://pip11plus.com/reading-school-11-plus-fsce).

## Frequently asked questions

**What is the FSCE creativity paper?**

It is the Discovery paper at Reading School and Chelmsford County High School. Children plan in their booklet, then write a handwritten answer to a creative task on a special answer sheet.

**Is Discovery the same as creativity?**

Yes, in practice. Discovery is the name of the paper and Creativity is the task it sets. Some tutors call it creative writing, but the official samples include poems, persuasion, problem solving and instructions.

**How long is the FSCE creativity paper?**

The latest official guide (2026) does not say. The only published timing is from an older 2021 guide: 5 minutes planning and 15 minutes writing, with a note that real timings might differ.

**Is the creativity paper marked for every child?**

No. The computer-marked papers are scored first. Only children who reach the qualifying standard have their Creativity answer judged.

**How is the creativity paper marked?**

By comparative judgement. Trained school staff compare two answers at a time and decide which one better answers the question. There is no published mark scheme.

**Can the creativity paper be re-marked?**

No. CCHS says it cannot be re-marked because it has already been judged many times by different staff. Re-marks of the other papers cost £75 per paper.

**Are there FSCE creativity past papers?**

No. Reading School says there are no authorised past papers or practice papers. The familiarisation guide has five sample tasks, and the content changes every year.

**Does my child have to write a story?**

Not necessarily, because the latest official samples ask for a poem, a persuasive answer, a problem and solution, written instructions and an imaginative choice. Practise a mix.

**Do all FSCE schools set a creativity paper?**

No. Reading School and CCHS describe one. The Lancaster, Skipton, Clitheroe and Ermysted's guide lists only English and maths papers. Check your school's familiarisation paper.
