_Clear progress for parents._

**TL;DR**

- An in-year place is a move **after the normal Year 7 entry point**.
- A grammar school can ask for proof of academic level, but **a pass does not create a place**: there must be a **vacancy**, or an appeal must succeed.
- Start with your **local council**, then read the school's policy on year groups, tests and waiting lists.
- The test may not look like the 11+, and if refused, ask for the reason in writing and check your **appeal rights**.

## The short answer

**An in-year place is a school move after the normal Year 7 entry point. A grammar school can require proof that the child meets its academic level. A pass does not create a place. There must also be a vacancy, or an appeal must succeed.**

Meaning

A move outside normal Year 7 entry

First limit

A place must be open

Selective school

A test may be required

If refused

Parents normally have appeal rights

## Start with the admissions route

Some councils manage in-year forms. Some schools take them direct. GOV.UK tells parents to contact the local council first.

Read the school policy too. It should explain the year groups, test and waiting list.

## Vacancy and ability are separate

A child may meet the school level but still be refused because the year group is full. The reverse can also happen. A vacancy does not remove the academic test.

_Useful facts for parents._

## The test may not look like the 11+

Schools can set age-fit English, maths or reasoning work. Some ask for school reports. Do not assume Year 7 practice papers match a Year 8 or Year 9 test.

## What to do after a refusal

Ask for the reason in writing. Check whether your child joins a waiting list. The refusal letter should explain appeal rights and dates.

## A simple parent checklist

| Step | Question to ask | Why it matters |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Find route | Council or school form? | Prevents delay |
| Check place | Is the year full? | A pass alone is not enough |
| Check test | Which subjects and level? | Keeps practice useful |
| After decision | Waiting list or appeal? | Protects next options |

Small steps add up

## Keep practice calm, short and useful

Pip helps children practise a little each day. It helps parents see what to do next without another long paper.

## Questions parents ask

**Is an in-year grammar test the same as the 12+?**

Not always. Some areas use a named transfer test. Other schools set their own test.

**Does passing guarantee a place?**

No. The year group must also have room, unless an appeal panel allows the case.

**Can we apply while moving area?**

Yes. Ask how the new address and move date will be checked.
