At the FSCE entrance test your child sits at a desk with a black biro, listens to a pre-recorded voice that runs every paper, and writes answers on separate answer sheets. There are no pencils, rulers, calculators or scrap paper, and wrong answers do not lose marks.
This guide covers the whole day in order: arrival, what to bring, how the audio and answer sheets work, breaks, and what happens if something goes wrong. Everything here comes from the official FSCE familiarisation guides and school admissions policies. For the test itself, see our FSCE 11+ explained guide.
If your child is in Year 5 now, their test day comes in 2027, for September 2028 entry. If they're in Year 4 now, it comes in 2028.
- Two black pens, a clear water bottle, tissues, a nut-free snack and glasses. Nothing else.
- Pencils, rulers, calculators, scrap paper and phones are banned.
- A recorded voice gives every instruction. Supervisors cannot read the questions or say if an answer is right.
- No marks are lost for wrong answers. Answer every question.
- Children can go back to earlier questions only within the same section.
- Start times, paper lengths and break times are set by your school. Read its letter.
What happens on FSCE test day?
The day follows the same steps at every FSCE school: arrive, check your details, hear a sound check, then sit each paper to a recorded voice, with breaks between papers where the school has scheduled them. FSCE does not publish a minute-by-minute timetable, so the clock times come from your school.
Most children sit the test at the school itself. Lancaster's FAQ says the test is most commonly held on the grammar school site, and that details arrive in your registration confirmation. Reading School's guide says its four papers might be sat in any order, so a friend's child may meet them differently from yours.
Most schools haven't published their 2027 test dates yet (checked 15 October 2026). The Gloucestershire grammars have: Saturday 3 July 2027, for 2028 entry.
Last year Reading School tested in July 2026, in Year 5, and Chelmsford County High and Lancaster Girls' tested in September 2026, in Year 6. Our FSCE schools list shows each school's dates from last year.

If your child must bring a phone, it has to be switched off, labelled with their name and handed to a supervisor. Parents must not phone or message their child during the tests. Clocks are displayed in each test room, and spare pens are available.
What should be on a test-day checklist?
A good test-day checklist covers the week before, the night before, the school bag and the morning. Tick it off on screen together with your child.
How do the audio instructions work on FSCE test day?
A pre-recorded voice gives every instruction before, during and after each part of the test. Every child in every room hears the same words and the same timings.
According to the official guide, the recording tells your child:
- when they may open the question booklet, and which page to turn to
- the section and page number
- how to answer the questions
- an example question, at the start of each section
- the time allowed for the section
- when they may start
Children are first asked to check they can hear the recording clearly. If they cannot, they should raise a hand. Listen to any sample audio your school links to, once, together before the day.
Supervisors are in the room, but they cannot read any of the words and cannot say whether an answer is correct. Children need to be able to read the questions for themselves.
How do the answer sheets work?
Each paper has a separate question booklet and a separate answer sheet, and the answer sheet is what gets marked. Children must write in black biro or ballpoint, and the question number on the sheet must match the number in the booklet.
| Paper type | How to answer | How to change an answer |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice (Adventure, Compass) | Fully shade one oval per question. Do not use a line. | Cross through the wrong oval and shade the new one. To go back to the first answer, cross out the wrong one and write the correct one to the right of the letters. |
| Short written (Beacon) | Answers go in boxes. Letter answers are in capital letters. | Cross out the answer and write the correct one above the box. |
| Creativity (Discovery) | A special answer sheet, handwritten. There is a short time to plan. | Not described in the guide. |
Children are asked at the start to check the details on the front of their answer sheet. If anything is wrong, they raise a hand and an adult helps. Our FSCE answer sheet guide goes through each type with examples, and this guide to the Adventure, Beacon, Compass and Discovery papers explains what each paper asks for.
Want the shading and boxes to feel automatic? Pip gives your child adaptive English and maths practice at the right level, so the questions themselves feel calm.
Is there a penalty for wrong answers, and can my child go back?
There is no penalty. The official guide tells children they will not lose any marks for incorrect answers, so they should try every question. If they do not know, they should make a best guess and move on.
Children can go back to questions they missed or were unsure about, but only inside the same section and only if there is time left. The recording sets the time for each section, so there is no moving to a different section early or returning to a finished one.
How long is the test and are there breaks?
FSCE does not publish paper lengths for Reading School or Chelmsford County High School, so your school's letter has the real timetable. The guides do say there are breaks between test papers where appropriate.
| School or group | Papers | Published timing |
|---|---|---|
| Reading School | Four: Adventure, Beacon, Compass, Discovery | Not published. Breaks between papers "where appropriate". |
| Chelmsford County High School | Check the school's guide | Not published |
| Lancaster Girls' Grammar, Skipton Girls' High, Clitheroe Royal Grammar, Ermysted's | Two: Adventure and Beacon, English and maths | Each paper typically 45 to 60 minutes, according to the FAQ they share. |
Sources: Reading School and Lancaster children's guides; FSCE FAQ for the Lancaster group. Some tutor sites quote exact minutes. We have not repeated them because no school or FSCE document confirms them.
Because there are breaks, a small snack and a drink matter. The snack must be nut-free.
What if my child needs help, feels unwell or has the wrong paper?
Your child should put their hand up. The official guide says to raise a hand for any question or problem, for example if they think they have the wrong test paper or feel unwell, and an adult supervisor will help.
Supervisors cannot help with the test itself. They will not read words aloud or say if an answer is right. That is why the recording does the explaining.
Practise to a voice, not a parent. Play a timer or recording that says "you have ten minutes, begin" and stop on the dot. Children used to a parent saying "take your time" can find a recorded countdown a shock.
Rehearse the pen. Do a page of practice in black biro only, with capital letters in boxes and fully shaded ovals. The reality is that a half-shaded oval is exactly the slip a nervous child makes.
Teach "guess, then move on". Frankly, with no penalty, a blank is a lost chance. Rehearse picking the most likely option in a few seconds, marking it, and returning if time allows.
Practise without scrap paper. The guide bans scrap paper, so working has to happen in the booklet. We could not find how much space the booklet gives, so get your child used to neat, small working.
What access arrangements are available on FSCE test day?
Schools decide access arrangements themselves, case by case, and you must ask when you register. The FSCE FAQ says to flag special educational needs or reasonable adjustments at registration, with supporting documents, and that each case is assessed individually.
| School | What is published |
|---|---|
| Lancaster, Skipton Girls', Clitheroe, Ermysted's | Give details at registration with supporting documentation. Examples named: extra time and modified papers. Assessed individually by the school. |
| Chelmsford County High School | Policy says it will consider requests for all reasonable adjustments. Support should ideally be requested at least 2 months before the test. Late requests are considered case by case. |
| Reading School | Last year, applicants with SEN were tested on a separate date, the day before the main test, and evidence for SEN or an EHCP was due by the end of May. |
We have not found a single FSCE-wide list of adjustments, so ask your school directly. FSCE says its aim is to give every child the same chance whatever their background, primary school or any disability.
What if my child is ill on test day?
It depends on the school, so contact the admissions office the same day. Chelmsford's policy says a child who is ill may be allowed a later date with a medical certificate, with evidence provided within 48 hours of the test. It also says a child cannot retake an individual test they have started.
The same policy says applicants who go to another school's test held on the same day as Chelmsford's will not be permitted to sit Chelmsford's. We have not found equivalent published rules for Reading or Lancaster, so check with them.
What happens after FSCE test day?
The papers are marked by optical mark recognition and, at Chelmsford, double scanned and checked. Schools send results before the Common Application Form deadline of 31 October in Year 6, which is 31 October 2027 for 2028 entry.
Our free FSCE 2027 Info Pack is for children sitting in 2027. It sets out the papers and the key facts in one PDF.

Make test day feel like practice
FSCE tests what school has already taught, up to the end of Year 5. Pip sets English and maths at your child's level every day, with a short explanation when they get one wrong.
How can we practise for the format of the day?
Practise the routine as well as the content. Use our free FSCE style practice papers and the FSCE practice questions and writing prompts with a black biro and a timer, and keep to the same rules as the real day.
For the school-by-school picture, see which schools use FSCE, and for the subjects the papers can draw on, see FSCE 11+ subjects. If you are weighing up tests, read FSCE vs GL vs CSSE. For the two groups, see Reading School and Lancaster, Skipton, Clitheroe and Ermysted's. Pip is not affiliated with FSCE.
Where do these facts come from?
Every rule on this page comes from official documents. Tutor guesses don't count. You can read them yourself:
- FSCE Familiarisation Guide for Children (Lancaster consortium, 2027 entry). Reading School publishes the same guide for its own test.
- FSCE FAQs for Prospective Parents (Lancaster consortium)
- Chelmsford County High School admissions policy for 2027 entry
- Chelmsford County High School FAQs
Checked 15 October 2026. These are the 2027 entry documents, the latest published, and rules can change for 2028 entry, so always confirm with your school.
