What is in the paper

Fifteen questions across the three skills the 11+ tests most, in the same multiple-choice format children meet on the day, marked on a separate answer sheet.

1

Comprehension

An original passage with inference, vocabulary and writer's-technique questions, each with five options.

2

Punctuation & grammar

Spot-the-mistake lines covering capital letters and punctuation, with the option to mark "no mistake".

3

Sentence completion

Choose the best word or group of words to complete each line in correct standard English.

About 11+ English practice papers

11+ English papers test reading comprehension alongside technical English: spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. If vocabulary is the weak spot, our free flashcards cover the must-have vocabulary for Year 6, including the harder words that catch children out, with Year 5 and Year 4 decks for younger children.

Many 11+ tests use multiple-choice English questions, but passages, timings and answer sheets differ by provider and school. This original paper gives children a useful subject rehearsal; check your own test format before using it as a mock.

For practice across subjects, try our free GL-style English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning papers. These are original Pip resources, not official GL Assessment papers.

The best way to use a practice paper is little and often. Give your child a calm 25 minutes, then mark it together with the answer key and talk through anything they missed.

Reading widely between papers does more for comprehension than any worksheet, so it is worth pairing papers with regular reading.

When marking reveals a particular gap, use our free 11+ comprehension worksheets with worked answers, punctuation worksheets or cloze worksheets before trying another full paper.

Papers are brilliant for rehearsing exam day, but they run out fast. For everyday practice, the free Pip 11+ English app generates unlimited fresh questions that adapt to your child and mark themselves, so a finished paper is never the end of the practice.
