A real reading challenge

What is inside the 11+ comprehension worksheets PDF?

The Missing Marker is a full original story about a clue that is easy to misread. Your child practises finding what the text actually supports, then checks every answer against evidence.

Quick answer: A useful comprehension worksheet includes a passage worth reading, questions that require different kinds of thinking and explanations that point back to the text. This PDF includes all three.

01

Read a complete story

The seven-paragraph passage gives your child characters, a small mystery and evidence to weigh. It is written for this worksheet, not copied from a published text.

02

Answer 12 questions

Four choices per question cover retrieval, inference, vocabulary in context and the main idea. Plausible distractors teach close reading.

03

Check the reasoning

Every answer names a clue and explains why it matters. Children can learn from a wrong choice rather than just seeing a letter.

One method, many passages

How to answer 11+ reading comprehension questions

Read the paragraph containing the clue, then compare each option with what is actually written. For inference questions, look for a sentence that makes an answer likely without demanding a direct quotation.

Retrieval

Find a stated fact. A correct answer may use different words from the passage while keeping the same meaning.

Inference

Combine a clue with a reasonable conclusion. Avoid answers that add a new motive or event the text never supports.

Vocabulary in context

Read before and after an unfamiliar word. Substitute each option and check which meaning fits the scene.

Main idea

Ask what the whole story adds up to, not which small detail you remember most easily.

Worked example from the PDF
'We know it is gone,' Maya replied. 'We do not know why.'

Question: What does Maya's reply show? Best answer: She wants evidence before deciding what happened.

The clue separates an observed fact from an untested guess. It does not prove who moved the marker.

A calm way to use the printable

  1. Let your child read the story once without stopping for questions.
  2. On a second reading, let them mark a clue for each answer.
  3. Discuss one tempting wrong choice before opening the answer pages.
  4. Choose one skill to practise again in Pip, such as inference or vocabulary.

After the paper

Turn one reading gap into fresh practice.

A printable makes it easier to notice what your child needs next. Pip gives them repeatable English questions and feedback after each answer, alongside Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

The free app adapts question level and brings skills back for review. Pip Pro adds interactive Pip Teaches lessons and a full exam-date study plan.

What does Maya's reply suggest?

'We know it is gone. We do not know why.'

She wants to check the evidence first. ✓
