What is inside the free 11+ cloze worksheet?
Each section asks your child to use a slightly wider clue. The answer pages explain grammar, time, word meaning or what the surrounding passage rules out.
Quick answer: A cloze question asks for the word or phrase that fits a gap. A strong choice fits both the local sentence and the meaning of the whole passage.
Sentence signals
Eight short gaps focus on agreement, tense, adverbs, possessives and linking words. Your child can learn to spot the type of clue.
The garden clue
A connected passage uses eight gaps to test meaning as well as grammar. Reading before and after each blank becomes essential.
The observatory
The final eight gaps ask for precise vocabulary, comparison and context. Every choice still has one best answer.
How to solve 11+ cloze passages
Read the passage once before answering a blank. Then use the words on either side to test grammar, time and meaning.
The subject controls agreement, and earlier verbs usually reveal the time frame.
A word such as "then" or "although" can reveal a time sequence or contrast.
Put each likely option into the whole sentence. The right word should sound natural and preserve meaning.
The runners waited ___ the whistle sounded, then they set off.
Best answer: until, because "then they set off" tells us when waiting ended. "Unless" would change the meaning.
Three useful habits for cloze practice
- Never decide from the word immediately before the blank alone.
- Cross out options that do not agree with the subject or tense.
- Use the passage's meaning to separate two grammatically possible words.
- Read the finished sentence aloud, then check the worked reason.

Which word keeps the meaning?
"Although the path was steep, Arun ___ climbing."
"Although" signals a contrast: the slope is difficult, yet Arun carries on. The past-tense story also needs a past-tense verb.
