How to solve 11+ punctuation questions

Read the whole sentence before looking at the answers. Ask what the punctuation needs to separate, own, introduce or show, then rule out the choices that break that meaning.

Quick answer: This worksheet builds from apostrophes and commas to speech marks, brackets, colons and semicolons. Each worked answer names the rule so a missed question becomes a specific skill to practise.

01

Spot the job

Does the mark show possession, direct speech or the boundary between clauses?

02

Read aloud

Notice where the voice pauses and whether the sentence means what the writer intended.

03

Prove your choice

Explain why the correct option works and what goes wrong in the tempting wrong one.

A worked example from the sheet

Where does the apostrophe go in children's?

If coats belong to several children, first identify the owner: children. That word is already plural and does not end in s, so add apostrophe and s.

Which sentence is correctly punctuated?

A. The childrens' coats were wet.
B. The children's coats were wet.
C. The childrens coats were wet.
D. The children's' coats were wet.
B is right: the children's coats were wet.

The same idea changes for a regular plural. If several dogs own bowls, write the dogs' bowls because dogs already ends in s.
