FSCE Answer Sheet: How to Fill It In

The FSCE answer sheet is a separate sheet from the question booklet. Your child shades one oval fully for multiple choice, and writes one digit or one capital letter in each box for short answers, all in black biro. Looking for practice material? See FSCE past papers and free alternatives.

This guide shows what each kind of answer should look like, how the official guides say to fix a mistake, and the slips that put answers at risk. You can also print our free practice sheet and let your child try it before test day. For the wider test, start with our FSCE 11+ guide.

If your child is in Year 5 now, they sit FSCE in 2027 (September 2028 entry), so there's plenty of time to make neat answers a habit. The rules here come from the latest official guides, for 2027 entry.

TL;DR
  • Each paper has its own booklet and answer sheet. Question numbers must match.
  • Multiple choice: shade one oval fully. No lines, ticks or half shading.
  • Short answers: one digit or one capital letter per box.
  • Use a black biro or ballpoint. Pencils, felt tips and other colours are banned.
  • No marks are lost for wrong answers, so answer every question.

What is the FSCE answer sheet?

The FSCE answer sheet is the sheet where your child records every answer for a paper. The question booklet is separate, and each paper has its own booklet and its own sheet.

The sheet already has your child's details printed on it. If those details are wrong, your child should raise a hand and tell an invigilator. The official Reading School guide for children also tells them to check that each question number on the sheet matches the booklet.

Schools differ on which papers they set, so the sheet your child sees may have only ovals, only boxes, or both. Check the school's familiarisation guide for its mix. Our guides to the Adventure, Beacon, Compass and Discovery papers and FSCE subjects explain what each paper asks.

How do you fill in the multiple choice ovals?

Shade one oval fully for each question, using a black biro or ballpoint. The official guide says to shade the oval, and not to draw a horizontal or vertical line through it.

The sample questions in the guides use A to D. The Lancaster consortium guide shows both A to D and A to E sections, so your child should look at how many ovals each question has.

One fully shaded oval is the answer to aim for. Lines, ticks, half shading and two shaded ovals are all unsafe.

Step by step: shading an oval

  1. Use a black biro or ballpoint. The instructions on the sample sheet say so.
  2. Shade only one response for each question. The Reading School guide says there is only one correct answer per question.
  3. Fill the oval fully. The guide says the oval needs to be fully shaded and not marked with a horizontal or vertical line.
  4. Check the number. The question number on the sheet must match the number in the booklet.

To change an answer: put a cross through the incorrect answer and shade the correct one. To go back to your original answer: put a cross through the incorrect answer and write the correct letter to the right of the letters. Both come from the Reading School children's guide, pages 11 and 14.

Pip's drawings above are our own mock-ups. The real sheet looks different, but the rule is the same: one oval, filled in all the way.

How do you write short answers in the boxes?

Write one digit, or one capital letter, in each box. If the answer is 20, the 2 goes in the first box and the 0 goes in the second. If the answer is TRAIN, each capital goes in its own box.

Right: one character per box, in capitals. Wrong: squeezed digits, small letters, or writing outside the boxes.

Step by step: writing in the boxes

  1. One number or one letter in each box. The guide says to write only ONE number in each box for number answers, and only ONE letter in each box for letter answers.
  2. Write clearly, in CAPITAL LETTERS. This is the guide's wording for letter answers.
  3. To correct a box: put a cross through the incorrect answer and write the correct answer above the box.

These come from the Reading School children's guide, page 11, which covers the Beacon paper's short written answers. Our drawings show 20 as a 2 and a 0 in two boxes, because the guide says one number per box.

What is not published: the guide doesn't say which box to start in, whether to right-align a number, or how to correct a digit. Our mock-ups start at the left box, which is our assumption. Ask the school if you need to be sure.

Frankly, children who join up their handwriting often slip into small letters, or let a long answer spill out of the last box. Both are easy to fix with practice.

Short answers need strong English and maths. Pip gives your child adaptive questions and lessons, pitched to what they can already do.

What pen should my child use?

Your child should use a black biro or ballpoint pen. The official guide says pencils, felt tips and pens that are not black are banned, and Frixion pens are allowed.

Spare pens are available on the day, so a pen that stops working isn't a disaster. Send a spare black biro anyway, and read our FSCE test day guide for the rest of the kit list.

How do you correct a mistake on the FSCE answer sheet?

Cross through the wrong answer, then give the right one clearly. The Reading School children's guide shows a different fix for each situation, and the diagram below follows it.

Three fixes from the official guidance: change an oval, go back to a first answer, or correct a letter in a box.

Wrong letter in a boxCross it out and write the correct capital above the box
Wrong digit in a boxThe guide shows the fix for letters only. Ask the school, and practise getting digits right first time

What mistakes can lose marks on the answer sheet?

The biggest risks are answers the scanner or marker cannot read clearly: two shaded ovals, faint shading, a wrong question number, or writing outside the box. Official sources say an unclear mark is checked by a person, but a clear answer is always safer.

Pip isn't the test owner, so we can't say exactly how each unclear mark is treated. The wording above comes from the official guides, and we've kept to it.

Can my child go back to earlier questions?

Yes, but only within the same section. The official guides say children can return to earlier questions in their current section, and that they don't lose marks for wrong answers.

That makes a simple routine: answer every question, mark any you were unsure about in your head, and use spare time to revisit them. Our pass mark and scores guide explains what the marks are used for.

Pro tips
  • Practise with the pen. A biro needs a firmer press than a pencil. Let your child shade ten ovals so they know how dark and how quick it is.
  • Touch the row, then shade. Put a finger on the question number on the sheet and say it out loud before shading. The reality is that most slips are a right answer in the wrong row.
  • Write names in capitals all week. Capitals in boxes only feel odd at first. A few days of writing shopping lists in capitals fixes it.

How is the FSCE answer sheet marked?

Sheets are scanned and marked by machine, then checked by people. Lancaster's FAQ says optical mark recognition is used, with expert humans verifying inconsistencies, amended answers and questionable responses.

Chelmsford County High School says its papers are double scanned using different optical mark readers and different staff. In its latest results FAQ, re-marks cost £75 per paper and weren't done until after national offer day on 1 March.

Creativity is the exception, as it is judged by teachers and cannot be re-marked at CCHS. Our Creativity paper guide explains more.

Is the Creativity answer sheet different?

Yes. The Creativity (Discovery) paper has its own special answer sheet, and only the answer sheet is marked. The official guide tells children not to write on it during planning time, so planning goes elsewhere.

Not every FSCE school sets Creativity. See which schools use FSCE to check the schools on your list.

How can my child practise with a free FSCE answer sheet?

Print our free practice sheet, give your child a black biro, and use it with any maths or English questions. The Reading School guide has its own practice sheets on pages 14 and 15, and ours is an unofficial extra with more rows.

We designed our sheet ourselves. The pre-printed pound sign and decimal point in some number boxes are our own idea, so don't expect them on the real sheet.

A ten-minute practice routine

  1. Print the sheet and find a black biro.
  2. Set ten questions from our free FSCE style practice papers or practice questions.
  3. Your child answers on the sheet, not on the paper.
  4. Check the shading together, then practise one correction.

Pip sets English and maths questions at your child's level. Wrong answers come with a short explanation, so your child learns the method, not only the answer.

What are the sources for this guide?

The rules above come from official FSCE school guides. We checked them in October 2026.

What we could not confirm: how many questions each paper has, how long each paper lasts at every school, and how a digit correction is handled. FSCE doesn't publish these, so check your school's guide. Pip isn't affiliated with FSCE.

Frequently asked questions

How do you fill in the FSCE answer sheet?+

Use a black biro. For multiple choice, shade one oval fully for each question. For short answers, write one digit or one capital letter in each box. Check that each question number matches the booklet.

What pen do you use for the FSCE test?+

A black biro or ballpoint pen. The official guide bans pencils, felt tips and pens that are not black, and spare pens are available on the day. Frixion pens are allowed.

How do you change an answer on the FSCE answer sheet?+

Cross through the oval you no longer want, then shade the one you do. To go back to your first answer, cross out the wrong oval and write the letter you want to the right of the ovals. For a letter in a box, cross it out and write the right capital above the box.

Do you lose marks for wrong answers in FSCE?+

No. The official guides say no marks are lost for a wrong answer, so your child should answer every question. They can go back to earlier questions only within the same section.

Do you write in the FSCE question booklet?+

Answers go on the separate answer sheet, and each paper has its own booklet and sheet. For the Creativity paper, only the answer sheet is marked, so nothing written during planning time counts.

How is the FSCE answer sheet marked?+

Chelmsford County High School says its papers are double scanned with different optical mark readers and different staff. Lancaster's FAQ says an optical scan is checked by people for inconsistencies, amended answers and questionable responses.

Where can I get a practice FSCE answer sheet?+

The Reading School guide includes practice answer sheets on pages 14 and 15. Pip's free printable answer sheet is unofficial, but follows the rules in the guides. It has 30 ovals and short-answer boxes on two A4 pages.
