Which times tables first?

Most schools teach the tables in this order, from easiest to hardest. Each group builds on the one before.

  1. 2, 5 and 10. Counting in steps your child already knows.
  2. 3, 4 and 8. The 4 table doubles the 2s, and the 8 table doubles the 4s.
  3. 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12. The 7s and 12s are hardest, so leave time for them.

Every level, in the free Pip app

Pip Dash and Pip Match are free in the app, and every level adapts to the tables your child finds hardest. To see every fact on one 12×12 grid, with tricks for the 9s, 8s and 12s, read our multiplication facts guide.

The Year 4 multiplication tables check

Children in England take the multiplication tables check in June of Year 4. It is 25 on-screen questions up to 12 × 12, with six seconds for each.

Speed matters, so quick recall games help more than slow written practice. Pip Dash and Rocket Run both reward fast, accurate answers.
