An in-year place is a school move after the normal Year 7 entry point. A grammar school can require proof that the child meets its academic level. A pass does not create a place. There must also be a vacancy, or an appeal must succeed.

Start with the admissions route
Some councils manage in-year forms. Some schools take them direct. GOV.UK tells parents to contact the local council first.
Read the school policy too. It should explain the year groups, test and waiting list.
Vacancy and ability are separate
A child may meet the school level but still be refused because the year group is full. The reverse can also happen. A vacancy does not remove the academic test.

The test may not look like the 11+
Schools can set age-fit English, maths or reasoning work. Some ask for school reports. Do not assume Year 7 practice papers match a Year 8 or Year 9 test.
What to do after a refusal
Ask for the reason in writing. Check whether your child joins a waiting list. The refusal letter should explain appeal rights and dates.
