This is the first thing to get straight, because parents lose weeks to it. Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls' School are different schools in Kingston upon Thames, with different admissions teams and different entrance tests. Registering for one does not register you for the other.

Both schools run the same broad shape at Stage One: an English paper and a maths paper on the same morning, with a short break in between, every answer marked on an OMR sheet read by a computer.

The maths paper's numeric questions are entered digit by digit. A single digit answer uses one column, a two digit answer uses tens and units, a three digit answer adds hundreds, and a question whose answer is a time uses four columns like a digital clock, so five past seven is entered as 0705. Practising the arithmetic without practising the recording format leaves an avoidable gap.
Both schools state that they assume the Year 5 National Curriculum and do not expect anything beyond it. Parents then sit the illustrative questions with their child and find them brutal. Both things are true, and the reason matters for how you prepare.
That has a direct consequence: pushing a child into Year 6 or Year 7 content is largely wasted effort for this exam. What pays is taking Year 5 material and meeting it in shapes the child has not seen before, which is exactly how both the illustrative questions and this practice paper are built.

Tiffin School in Kingston upon Thames selects by a two stage entrance test for Year 7 entry. The school works in partnership with Quest to set the papers. Stage One is sat by every registered candidate in early October and consists of an English paper and a maths paper, answered on an OMR sheet that is marked by a computer. Boys who do well enough at Stage One are invited to Stage Two in mid November, which covers the same two subjects but requires hand written answers.
They are two separate schools with two separate tests, although the shape is very similar. Both run a two stage process, both test only English and maths, both use a computer marked OMR sheet at Stage One and hand written papers at Stage Two, and both assume the Year 5 National Curriculum. The main differences are that Tiffin School sets its papers in partnership with Quest while The Tiffin Girls' School sets its own, and the girls' school publishes a specific weighting for its final Combined Mark.
Tiffin School states that the Stage One tests are typically between 40 and 60 minutes each, with a short break in between. The Tiffin Girls' School states that each Stage One test will last less than 60 minutes, again with a short break. Both schools note that the number of questions and the timings change from year to year, so treat any fixed number as a guide rather than a guarantee.
At Stage One, largely yes, but not entirely. The English paper is multiple choice throughout. The maths paper mixes multiple choice with questions that require a numerical answer, entered digit by digit in columns representing units, tens and hundreds, with four columns used when the answer is a time. Stage Two is not multiple choice at either school: candidates write their answers out, and some English questions require extended writing.
No. Tiffin School states plainly that it does not publish its own past papers, and that the papers change significantly from year to year, including the number of questions, the timings and the types of question assessed. Both Tiffin School and The Tiffin Girls' School do publish free illustrative questions on their own websites, and those are the single best guide to the real thing. Our practice papers are written to match that published format so your child has something fresh to sit.
Both schools assume candidates have completed the Year 5 National Curriculum in English and maths, and both say explicitly that they do not expect knowledge beyond it. That does not make the test easy. Tiffin School adds that the papers will include questions in unfamiliar formats so that boys can demonstrate their adaptability. In practice this means Year 5 content applied in ways children have not met before, which is why practising harder content is less useful than practising unfamiliar presentation.
For September 2027 entry, Tiffin School's Stage One test is on Friday 2 October 2026, with Stage Two in mid November 2026. The Tiffin Girls' School holds Stage One over two days, Thursday 1 and Friday 2 October 2026, with Stage Two in November 2026 and Stage Two invitations issued on or around Wednesday 14 October 2026. Registration for the girls' school runs from Tuesday 2 June 2026 to noon on Tuesday 1 September 2026. Always confirm dates on the school's own website before relying on them.
The Tiffin Girls' School ranks applicants on a Combined Mark made up of 60% English and 40% maths. The English mark comes from the Stage Two test only. The maths mark comes from both stages, weighting Stage Two and Stage One in a ratio of 3 to 1. Scores are standardised and age weighted. This is why Stage One is best understood as a sifting round for English but still counts towards the final maths mark.
