The key to Room 14

One moment and one choice. What happens next?

At 7:03, the library door clicked shut behind me. In my hand was a small brass key with the number 14 scratched into it.

Inside the free writing studio

An idea, a route through it, then room to write.

Many creative writing worksheets stop at a prompt. This one supports the difficult middle step: deciding what the scene is about before filling the page.

Quick answer: The free PDF has ten A4 pages: a simple story-craft map, two original writing prompts, planning boxes, full writing pages, an opening lesson, an editing exercise and a self-review guide.

01

Plan a scene

Choose a character or focal point, one meaningful change and a detail that matters.

02

Write on the page

Use a full lined page for the story and another for the description. No cramped answer boxes.

03

Improve one thing

Compare worked examples, edit vague sentences and use a calm review checklist.

PROMPT A · STORY

The key to Room 14

A library closes behind your character. The key in their hand opens a room that changes their plan.

Who holds the key? What do they want? What is behind the door?

The worksheet turns those questions into a short plan before the child writes.

PROMPT B · DESCRIPTION

When the lights went out

The fairground is quiet. One carousel horse moves after the final bulb fades.

What can be seen, heard or felt? Which detail tells the reader this moment is unusual?

This task builds a scene through selected details rather than a long plot.

A worked example

How do you start an 11+ creative writing piece?

Start close to the moment that matters. Give the reader a place, an action and one question to carry forward.

A child does not need a dramatic opening line before they can begin a good piece.

Before

I went into the room. I felt scared.

There was a key on the table.

After

The key stopped halfway into the lock. From the other side of Room 14, someone cleared their throat.

I had thought the library was empty.

The second opening uses a small problem, a purposeful sound and a question the reader wants answered. It does not need more adjectives.

The PDF explains these moves and gives your child lines to try their own version.

What should a parent look for?

Read the first draft as a reader. Ask whether the scene is easy to follow, the details matter and the ending moves somewhere.

Then choose just one sentence to improve together. The PDF's review grid is a practice guide, not an official scoring system.

Creative writing requirements vary by school and area. Use this as original English topic practice, and check your own test organiser for the current task and timing.

If your child needs reading ideas first, the comprehension worksheet explores how a writer's details create meaning. The vocabulary list with meanings can help them choose more exact words.

From the page into practice

Give the words behind writing more practice.

Writing draws on vocabulary, punctuation and reading. Pip's free English practice gives children fresh questions and feedback after each answer, so a gap spotted on paper can become a skill to work on.

Pip Pro adds interactive Pip Teaches lessons. The two creative writing prompts and lined writing pages are yours to use free in the PDF.
