Bexley’s verbal weighting makes close reading especially useful. The first question asks for evidence of suspense, rather than a guessed fact about the scene.
“The room fell silent as the headteacher unfolded the note.” Which detail most strongly creates suspense?
The silence and the unopened message make the reader wait for information. Height and ink colour are not supplied.
Four identical notebooks and a £2 pen cost £14 altogether. What does one notebook cost?
Remove the £2 pen: £12 remains for four notebooks. £12 ÷ 4 = £3.
Which pair has the same relationship as “scarce : plentiful”?
Scarce and plentiful are opposites. Generous and mean are also opposites; the other pairs are similar in meaning.
Which dot group comes next?
The number of dots doubles: 1, 2, 4, then 8. Count the dots rather than judging the size of the group.

- Give reading and word meaning regular attention: verbal ability accounts for half the combined score. Ask your child which words in a passage support an inference.
- Keep numerical and non-verbal work in the plan too. In the dot example, counting gives a more reliable rule than saying the picture gets bigger.
- Practise a section, then stop and discuss it. The real test has two booklets with separately timed sections; four questions here are a starting discussion, not a mock.
